Algunas notas sobre el racismo, el machismo, y otros temas

En Estados Unidos, después de siglos de esclavitud y represión, miembros de la raza blanca gobernante, y otros miembros de la sociedad, incluyendo a inmigrantes que realmente debían estudiar estos temas a fondo antes de exponer opiniones, sugieren que los negros o morenos actuales son demasiado agresivos y que se aprovechan de oportunidades creadas por el gobierno de los años 60, cuando la gente se botó a las calles a protestar la guerra en Vietnam y otros problemas sociales. La misma protesta se hace acerca de miembros de las razas "nativas" o "indias" que fueron aniquilados sin consideración. De hecho, a pesar de que eran los habitantes originales del país, al nativo no se le dio la ciudadanía estadounidense hasta la primera parte del siglo XX, en los mil novecientos veintinueve.

Estas oportunidades incluyen lo que se llama "affirmative action" o acción afirmativa, que consiste en hacer disponible ciertas categorías para que jóvenes de procedencia minoritaria, como los son los morenos y los hispanos, puedan ser considerados para trabajos, plazas como estudiantes en ciertas universidades, etc., simplemente por pertenecer a una clase protegida. El programa de acción afirmativa reconoce que cuando se ha explotado a un pueblo o raza o clase social por siglos, las consecuencias son aplastantes, en lo que se refiere, por ejemplo, a la auto-estima, y en cuanto al hecho sencillo de que en los barrios de blancos de aquéllos que tienen mejor posición social, las escuelas son mejores, el sistema judicial funciona de forma distinta, y en fin, el niño que nace en arrabal donde a lo mejor no tiene que comer hasta que llega a la escuela y disfruta de un desayuno o almuerzo caliente, no puede estar en la misma disposición de estudio del niño que tiene chofer, que tiene biblioteca privada, que tiene cama blanda y cuidados médicos de primera. Es un hecho que muchos jóvenes en edad de escuela superior, entre los 15 y 18 años de edad, están trabajando después de horas escolares para mantenerse o para ayudar a mantener a su familia.

El racismo y los prejuicios sociales continúan a todos los niveles de la sociedad norteamericana. Se ejerce en distintas formas; como está prohibido por ley, se le dificulta a la persona de clases o razas equivocadas el comprar, por ejemplo, casas en ciertos barrios. No les dan hipotecas; no les alquilan apartamentos, solapadamente, por supuesto, para no meterse en problema de demandas judiciales. En lo denominado discriminación "sexista," es un hecho que a la mujer, que es materfamilias, porque muchas veces se ha visto abandonada por un marido o novio que se va con otra y no paga para mantener a los hijos, gana menos que un hombre que hace un trabajo idéntico. De hecho, muchas mujeres al divorciarse se hunden en la miseria, porque tienen que trabajar para mantener a los hijos del matrimonio y pagar por el cuidado de los mismos, que en los Estados Unidos es sumamente costoso. Muchas madres no tienen seguro médico ni para sí mismas ni para sus hijos, por no poder pagarlo, y la medicina es demasiado costosa; una visita al salón de emergencia de un hospital resulta en cuentas a veces de miles de dólares...

En el caso del problema ocasionado por las actitudes machistas de la sociedad, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en el extranjero, la mujer se ve vejada por la sociedad; se le da poca o ninguna importancia a su labor ya sea como obrera o como madre de familia. A menos que tenga un alto grado universitario, se ve obligada a tomar un trabajo al sueldo mínimo, que en algunos lugares no pasa de $5.15 por hora. Después de impuestos, que son considerables, una mujer que trabaje 40 horas se ven con dificultades para pagar un alquiler de $600 a $1000 mensuales por un apartamento, en lo que son las ciudades. De aquí que muchas mujeres con sus hijos vivan en compañía de amigos, o en caravanas, o a veces en la calle.

Para el exterior, los Estados Unidos goza de privilegios en términos de trabajo y dinero, pero la realidad es que por esos prejuicios y actitudes tanto raciales como sociales, muchos miembros de la sociedad norteamericana viven en un estado económico precario. Cuento el caso de una cliente a la cual defendí por intento de robo en una tienda; trabajaba 48 horas semanales y al final del mes, después de impuestos, ganaba menos de $900, lo cual le impedía, después de pagar alquiler, electricidad, transporte y comida, gastar un centavo en nada para sí misma más allá de la subsistencia básica. No excuso el robo, pero creo que un ser humano que trabaja un número de horas a la semana merece algo más que ese sueldo mínimo QUE NO ALCANZA para vivir con las cosas que requiere un ser humano, incluyendo de vez en cuando comprarse un par de zapatos nuevos...

Con el problema de la actitud machista, muchas mujeres se consideran poca cosa e incapaces de llevar a cabo nada de importancia. Las doctrinas feministas intentan rehacer a la mujer como ser humano, y a su vez intentan pelear para que se le pague lo mismo por el trabajo realizado que a un hombre. Desgraciadamente para rehacer la conciencia social del oprimido, hay que llevar a cabo un programa de re-educación, de re-afirmación, incluso de terapia psicológica que incluya el poder expresar la rabia por haber sido explotado o vejado. Aunque los programas sociales en sí traen otros problemas, ya que muchas veces arraigan nuevas actitudes de merecimiento sin esfuerzo, son necesarios como mínimo para eventualmente equiparar al individuo que nace sin nada, con aquel que lo tiene todo.

El caso de Jorge Bush, presidente ilegal del país, es interesante. Nace en medio de una familia millonaria; va a una escuela privada preparativa y luego a la Universidad Yale, que es de lo mejor en el país. Lo arrestan en varias ocasiones por manejar borracho y por el uso de cocaína, pero el padre, millonario y poderoso, hace que al hijo le borren todo lo malo que ha hecho, como si no hubiera pasado nada. Se gradúa de Yale a pesar de que se ha pasado la mayor parte del tiempo en parrandas y cosas por el estilo. De hecho, cuando habla espontáneamente, dice tantos disparates que tienen un departamento especial para explicar sus meteduras de pata... Y sin embargo se roba la presidencia, con ayuda del padre y los hermanos, a pesar de que el otro candidato, Gore, es el que realmente ha ganado las elecciones; engaña al pueblo con guerras inventadas, para que no vean de cerca los crímenes en contra del pueblo de los miembros de su gobierno y gabinete, incluyendo al vicepresidente Cheney, envuelto en lo de Enron, Halliburton, y tantos escándalos más... En un mundo en el cual el mérito fuera por el trabajo hecho, y no por el apellido, la raza, la familia, Bush sería barrendero...

In the United States, after centuries of slavery and repression, members of the white governing class, and other members of the society, including immigrants who should really study these matters carefully before expressing an opinion, it is suggested that African Americans today are too aggressive and that they take advantage of opportunities created during the sixties, when people flocked the streets to protest the Vietnam war and other social problems. The same complaint is made as to "native" or "native American" races that were annihilated without concern or regard. In fact, despite the fact that these were the original inhabitants of the country, natives were not given US citizenship until the first third of the twentieth century, 1929.

These opportunities include "affirmative action," which consists of making certain categories available to youth coming from minority backgrounds, so that they may be considered for work, university admission, etc. simply because they can be included as members of these categories. The program acknowledges that when a people or race or social class has been exploited for centuries, the consequences are overwhelming, insofar as things such as self-esteem, and in the very simple fact, for example, that in the more well-to-do white neighborhoods, schools are better, the judicial system functions differently, in other words, the child born in the slum or the projects where there may not be any food until school provides a hot breakfast or lunch of sorts, that child cannot have the same desire to study as the child driven to school by his driver, who goes home to a private library, to a soft bed and first-class medical treatment. It is a fact that many young people between the ages of 15 and 18 are working after school to support themselves or to help support their families.

Racism and social prejudice continue at all levels of US society. They take many forms; because prohibition of racism is now enshrined in the law, the person who belongs to the 'wrong' class or the 'wrong' race has difficulties when he/she attempts to buy a house in certain neighborhoods. They will be denied mortgages, they will be told the apartment is already rented, and all of it under cover of some other excuse, of course, to avoid a lawsuit.
As to sexual or "sexist" discrimination, it is a fact that the woman, who is the materfamilias, because she may have been abandoned by a husband or boyfriend who leaves with another and fails to pay support for their children, earns less than a woman doing identical work. In fact, many women upon divorce sink into poverty, because they have to work to support the children of the marriage and to pay for their care, which in the United States is extremely expensive. Many mothers have no medical insurance either for themselves or for their children, and the medical system is too expensive; a visit to the emergency room of a hospital results in bills of thousands of dollars...

As to the problems caused by male chauvinist attitudes in society, in the US as well as abroad, a woman is typically put down by society; her work is denigrated, whether she is a factory worker or a housewife. Unless she has a graduate degree, she is forced to accept work at minimum wage, which often does not exceed $5.15 an hour. After taxes, which can be considerable, a woman working 40 hours is hard-pressed to pay rent of $600 to $1000 per month for an apartment in urban areas. Thus, many women with their children live with friends, or in trailers, or on the street.

The rest of the world believes that the US is privileged as to work and money, but the truth is that because of the prejudice, racial and class, many members of the society at large live in a state of financial precariousness. I had a client whom I defended for shoplifting in a store; she worked 48 hours per week and at the end of the month, after taxes, she earned less than $900, which made it impossible, after paying rent, utilities, transportation and food, for her to spend a single dollar on anything "optional" beyond basic subsistence. I make no apology for theft, but a human being who works a certain number of hours per week certainly deserves something more than a minimum wage THAT IS NEVER ENOUGH to live as a human being needs to live, including once in a while being able to purchase a new pair of shoes...

Because of male chauvinist attitudes in the society at large, many women feel they are not worthy enough and incapable of achieving things of importance. Feminist doctrine attempts to remake woman as a human being, and attempts to fight equal pay for equal work. Unfortunately, to rebuild the consciousness of an oppressed individual, a program of reeducation is required, of reaffirmation and even psychotherapy that may include the ability to express rage for years of exploitation and humiliation. Although social programs themselves create new problems, as they sometimes create attitudes of entitlement with no effort required, they are necessary at a minimum in order to enable the individual born with nothing to stand next to the one born with it all.

The case of George Bush, illegal president of the nation, is quite interesting. He is born in the midst of a family of millionaires; he goes to a preparatory private school and later attends Yale University, among the ritziest in the country. He is arrested on various occasions for drunk driving, for possession of cocaine, but the powerful and very wealthy father has all the son's past "mistakes" erased from his record, quite simply as if nothing had happened. He graduates Yale despite having spent his time in college carousing and in similar pursuits. In fact, when he speaks spontaneously, he says so many nonsensical things that they have a special department to explain his mistakes...

And yet he steals the presidency, with the help of his father and brothers, despite the fact that the other candidate, Gore, has won the popular vote and thus the election, fools the people with invented wars, so they may not see close up the crimes against the people committed by the members of his governing cadre and cabinet, including vicepresident Cheney, involved in Enron, Halliburton, and so many other scandals... In a world where merit were given for work truly done, and not for name, race, family, Bush might be a garbage sweep...
